Marvelous Light
Sara and I got to go to a Charlie Hall concert last night (for free!) thanks to a friend who won the tickets but couldn’t make it to the show. Charlie puts on a pretty neat show, especially since it’s a worship-concert instead of just a regular concert; the words to all the songs are displayed on screens like they might normally be at a church service or whatever. It was cool, because even though you probably don’t know the songs (unless you are familiar with Charlie Hall’s latest album, i guess), you can still sing along and worship God through the music. Charlie’s music is really well-suited to that also, since the songs aren’t very complicated and have easy-to-catch melodies, but they still have a good sense of spiritual depth to them.
Being at the concert had a curious sort of effect on me, actually in a couple of ways. First off, being in the audience instead of being on stage like i do each week at church gave me a new perspective and also, in an indirect way, reminded me of how I tend to focus a lot more on getting the chords right and the words right than I do on what I’m saying and opening my heart to God. It kind of stinks. I guess sometimes I want so bad to do things the right way that I miss the point of why I’d want to do what I was doing in the first place. And I figure, it’s not just in worship leading that I do that. I think God was able to squeeze his way into my heart last night, and that’s pretty cool. I hope that things will work better.
